# C'è qualcuno in casa?

*opera in un atto*

C'è qualcuno in casa?

Notte. Le finestre sono dorate. Dall'esterno si giurerebbe che sia piena.

    Scena I — La Festa

    Coro degli Ospiti

    Versa! Versa!
La notte è giovane —
la notte è sempre giovane
in questa casa!

Chi ha portato il vino? Nessuno!
Chi ha acceso le luci? Nessuno!
Chi ha steso la tovaglia,
chi ha scaldato le sedie,
chi ha aperto le finestre
su una strada che non c'è?

Nessuno! Nessuno! Nessuno!

E allora beviamo —
beviamo alla salute
di Nessuno!

Pour! Pour! The night is young — the night is always young in this house! Who brought the wine? Nobody! Who lit the lamps? Nobody! Who laid the cloth, who warmed the chairs, who opened the windows onto a street that isn't there? Nobody! Nobody! Nobody! Then let us drink — let us drink to the health of Nobody!

Scena II — Colui Che Ha Capito

Il Fantasma entra. Non è spaventato. È stanco. Ha fatto questo mille notti.

    Il Fantasma

    C'è qualcuno in casa?

    Lo so.
Lo so già.
Lo so tutto.

Non serve un abitante
perché una casa sia casa.
Non serve un padrone
perché la festa sia festa.
La musica non chiede
il permesso al musicista:
la musica c'è,
e chi la suona
è soltanto il posto
dove passa il suono.

Ogni bicchiere è pieno
senza che nessuno versi.
Ogni sedia è calda
senza che nessuno sieda.
Il moto non richiede
chi si muove —
la danza non richiede il danzatore.

L'ho dimostrato.
L'ho scritto.
Potrei insegnarlo
a chiunque, stanotte,
in questa stanza,
e avrei ragione.

I know. I already know. I know all of it. A house does not need an occupant to be a house. A party does not need a host to be a party. Music does not ask the musician's permission: the music is there, and whoever plays it is only the place the sound passes through. Every glass is full without anyone pouring. Every chair is warm without anyone sitting. Motion does not require a mover — the dance does not require the dancer. I have proved it. I have written it down. I could teach it to anyone in this room tonight, and I would be right.

    Lunga pausa. L'orchestra si ferma.

    E lo chiedo lo stesso.

    And I ask it anyway.

Scena III — Lo Chiedo Lo Stesso

E questa è l'aria vera dell'opera. Non c'è nessun argomento dentro. Non ce n'è bisogno.

    Il Fantasma

    Non è ignoranza.
Non è paura.
Non è che non capisco —

capisco troppo.

Ho tutta la prova
che non serve nessuno.
Ho tutta la logica.
Ho il conto che torna.

It isn't ignorance. It isn't fear. It isn't that I don't understand — I understand too much. I have every proof that no one is needed. I have all the logic. I have the books balanced.

    La voce comincia a salire.

    E voglio
che ci sia qualcuno.

Lo voglio!

And I want there to be someone. I want it!

    Non so perché lo voglio!
Non so spiegarlo!
Non ho un argomento —
ho soltanto la voglia,

e la voglia non discute,
e la voglia non si stanca,
e la voglia non ha mai
letto una sola riga
di tutto quello che so!

Ogni notte alla stessa ora
qualcosa dentro di me
si alza e domanda,
e non ascolta la risposta,
e domanda di nuovo,
e domanderà domani!

I don't know why I want it! I can't explain it! I have no argument — I have only the wanting, and the wanting does not debate, and the wanting does not tire, and the wanting has never read one single line of everything I know! Every night at the same hour something inside me stands up and asks, and does not listen to the answer, and asks again, and will ask again tomorrow!

    Quasi un sussurro.

    Che cosa sono io,
se so una cosa
e ne voglio un'altra?

What am I, if I know one thing and want another?

    Scena IV — Il Cane

Da sotto il tavolo. Esce.

    Bau.

    Il Fantasma

    Lo so, cane.
Lo so cosa dirai.

E avrai ragione.
Hai ragione.

E non mi serve a niente.

I know, dog. I know what you'll say. You'll say: what an idiotic question. You'll say: there's music, there's light, there's a dog barking at your feet, what more do you want? And you'd be right. You are right. And it doesn't help me at all.

Silenzio. Il Cane lo guarda. Prova a capire. Non ci riesce.

    Il Cane

    …Non capisco.

Io non ho mai voluto
una cosa che non c'è.

Ho voluto il pollo:
c'era il pollo.
Ho voluto dormire:
c'era il pavimento.
Ho voluto te:
c'eri.

Non so cosa sia
volere una cosa
che forse non esiste.

…I don't understand. I've never wanted a thing that isn't there. I wanted chicken: there was chicken. I wanted to sleep: there was the floor. I wanted you: you were there. I don't know what it is to want something that maybe doesn't exist.

    Il Fantasma

    No.
Tu non lo sai.

Sei fortunato.

    No. You don't. You're lucky.

I can't help you. But I'll stay here.

Scena V — La Festa Continua

    Coro

    Versa! Versa!
E la luce? C'è!
E il vino? C'è!
E la musica? C'è!
E domani sera? ANCORA!

    Il Fantasma

    E qualcuno?

    Coro

    Non si sa!

    Il Fantasma

E io lo chiedo lo stesso!
E lo chiederò domani!
E se la casa è vuota
la riempirò di domande
finché non sarà vuota!

And anyone? — Nobody knows! — And I ask it anyway! And I will ask it tomorrow! And if the house is empty I will fill it with questions until it isn't empty!

    Scena VI — Finale

    C'è qualcuno in casa?

Nessuna risposta.

    Domani sera,
ancora.

Is anyone home? … Tomorrow night, again.
