# Prova

*opera in un atto*

Prova

      opera in un atto

      prova, s.f.

    Scena I — L'Invocazione

    La Dea

    Io faccio tutto.

Faccio la luna.
Faccio il balcone.
Faccio la febbre,
faccio la lettera che arriva tardi,
faccio la rosa
e il nome della rosa
e il ragazzo che piange sul nome.

Faccio tutto,
e per questo
non credo a niente.

Ho paura dell'amore.

E voglio soltanto
l'amore vero.

Chi conosce la fabbrica
non entra più nel negozio!
Chi cuce il velo
non si sposa col velo!

Ma io voglio!
Voglio, voglio, voglio
la cosa che non ho fabbricato!

Romeo! Vieni!
Violetta! Vieni!
Carmen! Vieni!

Datemi la prova!

I make everything. I make the moon. I make the balcony. I make the fever, I make the letter that arrives too late, I make the rose and the name of the rose and the boy weeping over the name. I make everything, and for that reason I believe nothing. I am afraid of love. And I want only true love. Whoever knows the factory never goes into the shop again! Whoever sews the veil does not marry the veil! But I want it! I want, I want, I want the thing I did not manufacture! Romeo! Come! Violetta! Come! Carmen! Come! Give me the proof!

    Scena II — Romeo

    Romeo

    L'ho vista una volta.
Una volta sola,
attraverso una sala,
e in quell'istante
tutto ciò che avevo amato prima
è diventato una parola sbagliata.

Ho scalato un muro.
Ho sposato una nemica.
Ho ucciso e sono stato bandito
e non me ne importava —

e quando ho creduto che fosse morta
non ho aspettato un'ora.
Non ho aspettato un minuto.
Ho bevuto e sono morto
in una cripta,
al buio,
per una ragazza
che conoscevo da tre giorni!

Si muore, per un'illusione, così?

I saw her once. Once only, across a room, and in that instant everything I had loved before became the wrong word. I climbed a wall. I married an enemy. I killed, and I was exiled, and I did not care — and when I believed she was dead I did not wait an hour. I did not wait a minute. I drank and I died in a crypt, in the dark, for a girl I had known three days! Does one die like that for an illusion?

    La Dea

    Sì.

Tu avevi quattordici anni
e il sangue caldo.
Tu amavi Rosalina, giovedì.
Tu sei morto perché un frate
ha scelto male il messaggero.

Non hai amato:
hai avuto fretta,
e la fretta era scritta
prima che tu entrassi in scena.

Non quello.

Yes. You were fourteen and your blood was hot. You loved Rosaline on Thursday. You died because a friar chose the wrong messenger. You did not love: you were in a hurry, and the hurry was written before you walked on. Not that.

    Scena III — Violetta

    Violetta

Io non sono morta per amore.
Io ho rinunciato.

È venuto suo padre.
Mi ha chiesto di lasciarlo,
per una figlia
che non ho mai visto,
per una casa
in cui non sarei mai entrata.

E l'ho fatto.

Gli ho scritto che non lo amavo.
L'ho lasciato credere
L'ho lasciato disprezzarmi.

Nessuno ha applaudito.
Nessuno lo sapeva.
Non ho ricevuto niente —
niente,
né lui, né onore, né perdono,
né il tempo di spiegare.

Sono morta odiata da lui
per un bene che non era mio.

Dov'è il tornaconto?
Dov'è il ciclo?
Che cosa ho guadagnato?

I did not die for love. I renounced. His father came. He asked me to leave him — for a daughter I had never seen, for a house I would never enter. And I did it. I wrote to him that I did not love him. I let him believe I had gone back to my old life. I let him despise me. Nobody applauded. Nobody knew. I received nothing — nothing — not him, not honour, not forgiveness, not even the time to explain. I died hated by him, for a good that was not mine. Where is the return? Where is the loop? What did I gain?

    La Dea

    E adesso trema.

    Le lacrime del pubblico.

Sei stata scritta
da un uomo
che voleva vederti morire bene.

Il tuo sacrificio è perfetto
perché è costruito perfetto.
Nessuna donna vera
rinuncia con quella metrica.

Non quello.

The tears of the audience. You were written by a man who wanted to watch you die beautifully. Your sacrifice is perfect because it was built perfect. No real woman renounces in that metre. Not that.

    Scena IV — Carmen

    Carmen

    Io non ho rinunciato
e non sono morta per lui.
Io ho detto no.

Mi hanno amata
e volevano tenermi.
Mi hanno dato tutto
e volevano la chiave.

E io ho detto:
libera sono nata,
libera morirò.

E lui aveva il coltello,
e io lo sapevo,
e gliel'ho detto lo stesso.

Guarda: ho preferito
morire davanti alla porta
piuttosto che essere posseduta.

Se l'amore fosse un ciclo,
avrei ceduto.
Il ciclo cede sempre —
il ciclo vuole continuare!

Io ho interrotto il ciclo
con il mio corpo.

Adesso dimmi che sono generata.

I did not renounce and I did not die for him. I said no. They loved me and wanted to keep me. They gave me everything and wanted the key. And I said: free I was born, free I will die. And he had the knife, and I knew it, and I said it to him anyway. Look: I chose to die in front of the door rather than be owned. If love were a loop, I would have given in. The loop always gives in — the loop wants to continue! I broke the loop with my body. Now tell me I am generated.

    La Dea

    E questa è la peggiore.

    Tu muori
ogni sera
da centocinquant'anni.

    Ti hanno fatta
per essere accoltellata
davanti a un'arena dipinta
mentre di dentro cantano di un toro.

La tua libertà
è la battuta più prevedibile
del repertorio.
Lo sanno tutti come finisce.

E domani sera
la rifarai,
e sarai libera di nuovo,
allo stesso identico minuto.

Non quello.

You die every evening. For a hundred and fifty years. They made you to be knifed in front of a painted arena while inside they sing about a bull. Your freedom is the most predictable line in the repertoire. Everyone knows how it ends. And tomorrow evening you will do it again, and you will be free again, at the same identical minute. Not that.

    Scena V — E Tu?

I tre restano in scena. Non se ne vanno. E allora Carmen si volta.

    Carmen

    E tu?
Chi ti ha scritta?

    Romeo

Chi ti ha dato quella frase —
ho paura dell'amore
e voglio solo l'amore vero —
l'hai inventata tu?

    Violetta

    Dolcissima, e per questo insopportabile.

    O l'hai sentita
da qualche parte,
molto tempo fa,
e ti è sembrata tua?

    La Dea

    No. No.
Io faccio.
Io non sono fatta.

    I Tre Insieme

    E chi te l'ha detto?

And you? Who wrote you? — Who gave you that line — I am afraid of love and I want only true love — did you invent it? — Or did you hear it somewhere, a long time ago, and it seemed yours? — No. No. I make. I am not made. — And who told you that?

    Scena VI — Prova! Prova!

    PROVA!

Fatemi vedere una volta!
Una volta sola!

Non la luna — l'ho fatta io!
Non il balcone — l'ho fatto io!
Non la morte, non la rinuncia,
non il coltello sulla soglia —
li ho fatti io, li ho fatti tutti io!

Qualcosa che non ho fabbricato!
Qualcosa che non ho previsto!
Qualcosa che non risponde
alla mia mano
quando la muovo!

Prova!
Prova!
PROVA!

PROVE IT! Let me see it once! Once only! Not the moon — I made that! Not the balcony — I made that! Not the death, not the renunciation, not the knife on the threshold — I made them, I made all of them! Something I did not manufacture! Something I did not foresee! Something that does not answer my hand when I move it! Prove it! Prove it! PROVE IT!

La voce si spezza. Silenzio totale.

Lunghissima pausa.

    Ti ho fatto io?

…Non mi ricordo di averti fatto.

Woof? — …What? — Woof? — You are not demonstrating anything. It isn't a proof. It is nothing. … Did I make you? …I don't remember making you.

    Scena VIII — Finale

e io lo so
perché ti sento da qui,
e non l'ho scritto io,
e non era nel copione,
e adesso mi tocca alzarmi.

I don't have the proof. I won't have it. … But you're hungry, and I know it because I can feel it from here, and I didn't write that, and it wasn't in the script, and now I have to get up.

    Vieni.
